Everyone has a different taste in comedy. Some people laugh when a clever joke is made, and others laugh when someone farts. The films below are some of my favourite comedies, and are all very underrated, so give them a watch if you have the chance! You might just find a hidden gem in here.
Honourable mentions: The Man, Angry Birds
10. 50 First Dates (2004)
Metacritic: 48/100Rotten tomatoes: 45%
Adam Sandler may not do comedies as good as he used to anymore, but at least he’s got a bunch of classics to look back on. 50 First Dates was both funny and sweet, with some great chemistry between Sandler and Drew Barrymore.
9. Happy Gilmore (1996)
Metacritic: 31/100Rotten tomatoes: 61%
Happy Gilmore is Adam Sandler’s funniest film in my opinion. It’s completely silly, but you can’t help but laugh at how amazing and terrible he is at golf. You were supposed to go home ball!
8. Let’s Be Cops (2014)
Metacritic: 30/100Rotten tomatoes: 19%
This is the lowest rated film on my list, and I don’t understand why it got criticised so much. It’s a very funny buddy cop film with two great leads and a lot of great gags. I’ve seen it multiple times over the years and still get a good laugh out of it. I guess critics prefer Seth Rogen’s uninspiring sex and drug jokes these days.
7. Twins (1988)
Metacritic: 53/100Rotten tomatoes: 44%
I’m so glad that Arnold Schwarzenegger started doing comedy films as well as action because he’s actually really funny and suits them so well. This is a great feel-good film with two wonderful lead actors. Whoever thought to cast Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito as twin brothers is both crazy and a genius.
6. Ace Ventura series (1994, 1995)
Metacritic: 37/100 | 45/100Rotten tomatoes: 47% | 32%
Jim Carrey is a wacky actor, but he takes things to a whole new level in the Ace Ventura films. No other actor could’ve been in his place. They’re the silliest films on my list, but that’s what makes them so funny.
5. Bruce Almighty (2003)
Metacritic: 46/100Rotten Tomatoes: 48%
Steve Carell’s news report scene alone is enough to put it this high on my list. Bruce Almighty was both a clever and hilarious idea for a film that worked so well, and most of that is down to the brilliant Jim Carrey once again.
4. Dumb and Dumber To (2014)
Metacritic: 36/100Rotten tomatoes: 30%
Yes, the jokes and gags are incredibly dumb, but it’s a Dumb and Dumber film so that’s exactly what I wanted and expected from it. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniel’s play the goofballs that we all know and love just as brilliantly as the first film. Personally, I found this even funnier than the original.
3. Dinner for Schmucks (2010)
Metacritic: 56/100Rotten tomatoes: 41%
Paul Rudd and Steve Carell. Enough said. I love them both, and this is one of my favourite films for them both. In fact, this is probably Carell’s funniest role he’s ever done. It’s a very underrated comedy that more people need to see.
2. Johnny English trilogy (2003, 2011, 2018)
Metacritic: 51/100 | 46/100 | 39/100Rotten tomatoes: 33% | 38% | 37%
Rowan Atkinson is legendary in the world of comedy. I’ve been watching him since I was a child as Mr. Bean. Now I’m 24 and he’s still making me laugh as Johnny English. The Johnny English films are silly versions of the James Bond franchise, and they’re just so damn entertaining. They must’ve been pretty successful for them to make three of them.
1. Grimsby (2016)
Metacritic: 44/100Rotten tomatoes: 38%
I’ve never laughed harder in a film than I did in Grimsby. At one point I was laughing so hard that I had to gasp for air. Sacha Baron Cohen is absolutely hilarious, and every role I’ve ever seen of his has had me in tears. Grimsby is completely outrageous with so many r-rated jokes, but it’s from the same guy in Borat, The Dictator and Ali G, so what do you expect?
